Signs I Need a New Set of Spark Plugs

If your car needs a new set of spark plugs, you can count on CAR FIX in Maryville for the service. Our certified and experienced technicians know how to tune up an engine quickly. Technically, it’s the ignition system that gets tuned up, and part of that service is to replace the spark plugs. Below, you will find the signs that your spark plugs are going bad and need to be replaced.

I Can’t Start the Car

If you have started to have difficulties getting your vehicle to fire up when you press the start button or turn the ignition key, it’s possible that the spark plugs are not firing correctly. In order for your vehicle to start, air and fuel in each cylinder are set on fire by a spark from the spark plug in that cylinder. If one or more of the spark plugs cannot fire a spark, it will be difficult to start your car.

The Car Is Idling Roughly

Even if you do get the car started, you may notice that the engine is not performing as it normally does. The engine is going to misfire if the spark plugs are not operating correctly. What this means is you may have one or more cylinders in the cylinder block that does not get a spark from the spark plug. This is called misfiring, and it will make your engine idle roughly.

The Engine Is Knocking

The misfiring will also make your engine knock. In addition, when you are driving your automobile, it will sputter and hiccup. The only way to resolve this performance problem is to replace the spark plugs so all of the cylinders are firing in the order in which they should fire. This will stop the knocking noise because the cylinder block will no longer misfire, i.e., have a detonation problem.

The Acceleration Lags

Worn spark plugs can also cause problems with your vehicle’s acceleration. Unfortunately, the acceleration will lag and be slow to respond when you press down on the accelerator. Again, the ignition tune-up can restore the engine’s performance, including the acceleration.

I’m Getting Poor Gas Mileage

Finally, your automobile will start to get poor gas mileage if the spark plugs have worn out. This is one reason why we recommend that you have your ignition system tuned up when it needs it. This helps the engine to run more efficiently and gives you better gas mileage.
